Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials , Consumer Goods and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.84% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.15%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Unitedhealth Group (NYSE: UNH ), which rose 5.41% or 28.38 points to trade at 553.08 at the close. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE: JPM ) added 1.15% or 2.47 points to end at 216.91 and Travelers Companies (NYSE: TRV ) was up 1.15% or 2.70 points to 236.53 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ), which fell 4.79% or 8.69 points to trade at 172.77 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ) declined 4.21% or 2.34 points to end at 53.27 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ: AMGN ) was down 3.24% or 9.38 points to 280.31.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Humana Inc (NYSE: HUM ) which rose 10.69% to 281.95, CVS Health Corp (NYSE: CVS ) which was up 5.92% to settle at 67.63 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE: UNH ) which gained 5.41% to close at 553.08.

The worst performers were Albemarle Corp (NYSE: ALB ) which was down 12.64% to 50.76 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ: ENPH ) which lost 11.21% to settle at 49.51 and Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ: QRVO ) which was down 9.90% to 50.81 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Twin Vee Powercats Co (NASDAQ: VEEE ) which rose 1,337.69% to 3.38, Femto Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: FMTO ) which was up 390.92% to settle at 2.81 and NanoVibronix Inc (NASDAQ: NAOV ) which gained 141.82% to close at 7.20.

The worst performers were XChange TECINC DRC (NASDAQ: XHG ) which was down 66.84% to 0.30 in late trade, Bluejay Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ: BJDX ) which lost 60.67% to settle at 2.95 and CVRx Inc (NASDAQ: CVRX ) which was down 46.27% to 6.20 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2124 to 691 and 44 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2590 fell and 745 advanced, while 92 ended unchanged.

Shares in Albemarle Corp (NYSE: ALB ) fell to 5-year lows; down 12.64% or 7.35 to 50.76. Shares in Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ: ENPH ) fell to 3-years lows; down 11.21% or 6.25 to 49.51. Shares in Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ: QRVO ) fell to 5-year lows; falling 9.90% or 5.58 to 50.81. Shares in Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ) fell to 5-year lows; down 4.21% or 2.34 to 53.27. Shares in XChange TECINC DRC (NASDAQ: XHG ) fell to all time lows; down 66.84% or 0.61 to 0.30. Shares in Bluejay Diagnostics Inc (NASDAQ: BJDX ) fell to all time lows; down 60.67% or 4.55 to 2.95. Shares in CVRx Inc (NASDAQ: CVRX ) fell to 52-week lows; losing 46.27% or 5.34 to 6.20.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.20% to 52.24 a new 5-year high.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.76% or 22.57 to $2,996.17 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 3.95% or 2.40 to hit $58.30 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 4.05% or 2.60 to trade at $61.61 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.30% to 146.46.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 102.82.
